The Stolen Child

The Stolen Child by Brian McGilloway

Date Finished: 18/8/12

Read in under 30mins

A very short read but it captivated me as a reader throughout and the fact that it was free to download from amazon was a bonus! Sometimes I have found short reads to be rushed especially towards the end, but this ebook with its twists and turns kept me readng. I do feel the story would do great if extended further and made into a book or even novella.

Ginger gives 5 stars to this fab read!

Empire 1 Wounds of Honour

ImageEmpire Wounds of Honour by Andrew Riches
Date Finished: 16/08/12 Pages: 341
Hey guys specs here! Last week me and ginger stumbled across a small second-hand book shop called Cooperfields located in Wimbledon, and in their military fiction section I stumbled across Empire 1: Wounds of Honour by Andrew Riches.
This book is set in roughly 181 A.D during the reign of the Roman Emperor Commodus. Wounds of Honour is a hands on nitty gritty book that delves deep into the politics surrounding Rome and also that of the legions and Auxillary forces, it is set in Brittania around Hadrians Wall. The book explores the majority of the lifestyle that is associated with the Roman War Machine, and as a large fan of the Simon Scarrow’s ‘Eagle Series’ I believe that this is as good if not better than some of the instalments in that famous serious of books. This book excels in its descriptive accounts of everything from the Tribal War Bands of Northern England to the way a legion prepares the ground in-front of them when waiting to receive an attack from a superior force in terms of numbers. This book is a brilliant opening to a series and I would strongly recommend this book and series to anyone interested in the Roman Legions and there conquest of Brittania.
As such I award this riveting Military Fiction 4 out of 5 stars !

SPOILERS !!!!!
The book focuses on the exploits of a young centurion by the name of Marcus Valerius Aquila sent to serve with the 6th Roman Legion in the north of Brittania occupying a fort close to the wall. What he does not know is that his father has been accused of treason against the emperor and his family given the same title.
As well as having to be concerned by the 30 thousand strong British force that want his head on a plate, he also has to watch his own back from Titus Tigidius Perennis who has treacherous plans of his own. In his quest for a slow vengeance he will have to watch both his front and back from possible attack.

Perfect Crime

ImagePerfect Crime by Jack Erickson

40% of ebook is previews of other ebooks

Date Finished: 15/8/12

This ebook is currently in the top 100 free ebooks list on amazon, and when I realised it was a very short read I decided to give it a shot. It started out to be well written and kept me reading. However about 58% through the ebook the story was coming to a sudden finish. I felt the author could have dragged the end out a little bit more to continue the enjoyment. Ginger x

Broadmoor Revealed: Victorian Crime and the Lunatic Asylum

ImageBroadmoor Revealed: Victorian Crime and the Lunatic Asylum by Mark Stevens

Date Finished: 2011

I have had a strong interest in the history of asylums and workhouses and I then came across this free ebook last year. Not only does it disclose the history of Broadmoor but also details the lives of a handful of its inmates. I dislike books that overload you with facts and figures and found this ebook the opposite, it is a great history read which I could learn from and enjoy. Ginger x

I give this ebook …

Fifty Shades of Silver Hair and Socks

ImageFifty Shades of Silver Hair and Socks by Phil Torcivia

Date finished: 15/8/12 57 pages

Ginger > After reading Fifty Shades of Grey, I then came across this ebook which at the time was free to download at Amazon. As the title attracted me with its comical take on the original book, and with its lack of pages I read this ebook within an hour one morning. I enjoyed this book more than the original (don’t shoot). It’s humour and slightly erotic scenes make it a fun read for any woman. It appears to be a spoof but has its own comical story to tell and you do not have to have read Fifty Shades of Grey to enjoy Phil Torcivia’s little delight.

Now off to find more books by Phil 🙂

Hey guys Specs here! > So I decided to give this short 57 page ebook a shot on the recommendation of Ginger, and may I say that it is well worth a read. Even though the book is a parody of Fifty Shades of Grey, it has enough of a story to work well as a stand alone series. The book itself does make several references to the orginal but even though I have not read the actual book, the references still have a wealth of comedy value. The raunchy scenes are described well and again have a heavy comical underlay.

As such I award this raunchy & funny ebook…

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

The Boy in the striped Pyjamas by John Boyne

Date Finished 14/8/12 207 pages

When I picked up this book I had yet to watch the film, but was intrigued by it’s popularity. It is important to remember that this book was not necessarily written for adult readers. Therefore its simplicity and 207 pages fit in well with its young audience. However, I must say I was rather disappointed with this book especially as I was heading towards the end. I felt the build up to the finale was rushed and the ending was abrupt.

Overall I give 3 stars to this quick YA read!
